Photographed in November 2015 from the deck of the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, Breakwater at the Gray Ghost captures the rigid geometry of a breakwater slicing across the Pacific. Once nicknamed the “Gray Ghost” for her stealth wartime crossings, the ship now rests permanently in port, looking out across this barrier between safety and the open sea. The photograph’s composition, dividing stone from water, speaks to the boundaries we create between history and memory, protection and exposure.
